Although there does not appear to be any hardware available yet that is compatible with this new app from Google, Live Channels for Android TV has appeared in the Google Play Store. The app will give viewers the ability to watch Live TV on their Android TV device. Broadcasts that will be available according to Google’s description include news, sports, movies and TV shows from a variety of sources. Those sources may include a built-in tuner in a device, IP-based tuners, or other sources.

The ability to tap into live TV broadcasts is a feature that Google discussed this past summer during Google I/O when announcing the new Android TV framework. Getting live TV content onto Android TV and into the app will probably still require consumers to buy a subscription to some service like DISH, DirecTV, or the local cable company. Once hooked up though, it appears the Live Channels app will make it a lot easier for consumers to switch sources and tap into the incoming signals.

With CES 2015 coming up next month and the release of this app, it seems like there may be a good chance we will see some Android TV devices announced.

Although you will not be able to make use of the app, if you want to check out Live Channels in the Google Play Store just hit one of the links below.
