OnePlus has had a rough year as a start-up. Established late last year, they promised to provide a flagship-level phone for a low, mid-range price. This garnered a lot of attention, with many Android enthusiasts excited about the prospect of having a nice phone without having to pay an arm and a leg. Then, OnePlus announced their first phone, the One. A handsome device with top of the line specs and the first phone to be released with Cyanogenmod, OnePlus was providing the experience users were looking for, all for a starting price of $299.
Only one problem: you needed to have an invite to get the phone. Promising to be communicative and provide many opportunities to get an invite, they set off to do things differently so as to not overwhelm themselves with orders they couldn’t keep up with. To get the devices so cheap, they can only make them as orders come in. At first, everyone was willing to work with OnePlus. Then, they weren’t sending out invites in enough batches and as quickly as consumers wanted, and people started voicing their thoughts on the OnePlus blog. As the months went by, OnePlus kept promising by the end of summer everyone would have the ability to purchase a OnePlus One without an invite. Well, end of summer came and went, with no ability to do as much.
Finally, OnePlus announced they would be starting a pre-order system, and do it a day at a time to test the waters. They did their first go-round on Monday, and surprise: Their servers struggled. Consumers were left in the dust as their servers choked on the traffic. Well, this morning OnePlus has apologized (again) and is giving consumers another chance.
On November 17, consumers will have another shot at pre-ordering the One, and Oneplus is ensuring that their servers can handle it.
