Fleksy Keyboard review

Share

Fleksy 1

Fleksy is one of the best keyboards available for Android.

There is one particular keyboard app that refuses to get pushed around by the big names in the industry. With the constant updates, support for over 35 languages, and the ability to boast the “fastest keyboard in the world”, Fleksy is worth taking a look at. Here’s our review of Fleksy Keyboard for Android.

Gestures

Fleksy 2One of the big draws for switching to Fleksy is the amount of supported gestures. The most notable of which being a quick swipe left tobackspace, or a swipe right to add a space. Once you’re used to it, this can save you a lot of time while typing. Fleksy also makes it easy to access special characters by swiping up from the number shortcut, and moving your finger directly to the character you want, instead of tapping each individual button. This, in turn, can also save you a lot of time.

But where’s the swipe?

Unfortunately, Fleksy comes with a huge gripe for a lot of people… no swipe functionality. One of the most convenient things about typing on Android is the ability to swipe from letter to letter to get you the word you want. It’s a huge feature that many of us have adopted, and quite frankly, can’t live without.

I know, I know… How are the other gestures possible if they added in swipe? There would be no way to swipe from left to right to add a space if swipe was enabled. It makes sense. But not all users want that. Perhaps a nice way of fixing it would be to enable swipe functionality and disable the other gestures, or vice versa. Just a thought, but it could bring a lot more users on board.

Themes

There are 6 themes available in the free version of Fleksy, and 10 for the pro version. Unfortunately, you can only unlock one premium theme for free, even after paying the $1.99 price to upgrade to premium. Each premium theme after your first free one is $.99, which could be much worse.

Although the themes aren’t the cheapest and most accessible, there are plenty of really good looking themes to choose from.

Extras

Fleksy comes with quite a few extras in the app, including the World Record Challenge, badges that can be earned, and an experimental invisible keyboard. Not many other keyboards out there put so much time and effort into extra details like these, and they definitely add a nice touch to the experience.

What we liked

  • Plenty of unique gestures
  • REALLY good looking themes
  • Quite a few extras to make the app more enjoyable

What could be improved

  • No added swipe functionality could turn away a good amount of users
  • Paying for themes even after the premium upgrade fee

Should I go premium?

The great thing about Fleksy is the ability to try it out for a few weeks before you make your final decision. Download the free version, and get to typing. Sure, it takes a little while to get used to, but that’s why you can try it out before you upgrade. I did, and I have’t turned back.

The folks over at Fleksy are doing some great things in the mobile typing space, and deserve some credit for the amount of work that is apparent in every update. Grab the download link below and try it out… you’ll be glad you did.
