How to create collaborative playlists on Spotify

Have you ever wanted to create a playlist that you could edit with other people? If you’re in the backseat on a road trip, the two sitting upfront will probably have more control over the music than you. If the music is being played from a collaborative playlist and you’re part of it, you can add songs without moving an inch. Collaborative playlists are a quick, easy, and fun way to ensure everybody gets to listen to something they enjoy. Let’s review how to make a collaborative playlist in Spotify.

Are collaborative playlists only for Spotify Premium members?

No, you don’t need to be a Spotify Premium member to create a collaborative playlist. Furthermore, you don’t need to be a Spotify Premium member to join as a collaborator on somebody else’s collaborative playlist. This is a feature everyone can access.

THE SHORT ANSWER 

To make a collaborative playlist in Spotify mobile, start a new playlist. From the playlist page, tap the Add users button that looks like a head and shoulders. Press Make collaborative and share the link with whoever you want to collaborate with.

To start a collaborative playlist on the Spotify desktop app, create a new playlist. Click More (ᐧᐧᐧ) > Collaborative playlist > Share to share the link with whoever you want to collaborate with.

How to make a collaborative playlist on Spotify (Android & iOS)

The Spotify mobile app is the mode by which most people listen to music and manage their playlists.

How to take a collaborative playlist and make it private/non-collaborative

Open the collaborative playlist > ⋯ > Make Private.

Open the Spotify mobile app, and tap the Your Library tab from the bottommost toolbar. Above your Liked Songs and all of the other buttons, tap the + button in the top right corner to start a new playlist.

Give this new playlist a name.

Press the Add users button that looks like the silhouette of a head and shoulders with a plus in front.

Can anyone edit a collaborative playlist?

Anyone on Spotify who has access to the collaborative playlist link can edit the playlist. If they don’t have the link, they have no way to access and edit the playlist.

You will receive an alert saying that the playlist is about to become collaborative. Press Make collaborative.

Tap Copy Link to copy the link to your clipboard. You can share that link with the people you want to collaborate with.

How to remove someone from a collaborative playlist

You must be the one who started and owns the collaborative playlist. Open the collaborative playlist, then select the users below the playlist title. Tap the ⋯ button next to the user you want to remove, then select Remove as a collaborator.

How to make a collaborative playlist on Spotify (desktop)

The Spotify web player and desktop app share many similarities. They are almost identical. However, there’s one significant difference in this case: the web player does not support collaborative playlist creation.

How many people can edit one playlist?

In terms of how many people can collaborate on a playlist, there is no limit.

Open the Spotify desktop app and press the Create Playlist button on the left.

If you want, you can click on the auto-generated name of the playlist to edit it. In this case, Spotify generated the title “My Playlist #1” for this new playlist.

While editing the playlist’s name, you can also add a description and a cover photo.

Press the ᐧᐧᐧ button to open the dropdown options menu for the playlist. Click on Collaborative playlist, which will add a checkmark next to that option. The playlist is now a collaborative playlist.

Press the ᐧᐧᐧ button again to open the dropdown options menu for the playlist. Now, select Share to copy the link that you can send to the people you want to collaborate with.

Can I create collaborative playlists on the Spotify web player?

No. The Spotify web player doesn’t incorporate the collaborative playlist creation function.
