Although we are still waiting for the first Snapdragon 820 equipped smartphone to hit the market, that has not stopped the crystal ball gazers from trying to look into the future and take a swing at projecting what Qualcomm’s next generation device may have in store. Chines analyst Pan Juitang thinks the next generation chip from Qualcomm, which one assumes would be the Snapdragon 830, will come with the ability to support up to 8GB of RAM. If you are wondering why, Juitang thinks the additional RAM will be necessary to support projected multi-tasking and computing needs.

The question of whether smartphones are going to close the gap with personal computers to such an extent seems to be key to this latest guess about the future. From a commercial standpoint though, it may make sense for Qualcomm to go down a path like this. Recently, there has been a slate of news coming out of Asia about efforts by companies to move chip production in-house and move away from suppliers like Qualcomm. To combat those moves, Qualcomm could launch a “spec” war, not unheard of in the smartphone industry, pushing for higher level capabilities whether actually needed or not.

In addition to support for larger amounts of RAM, expect to see more of a focus on heat and energy management, especially as it impacts battery life between charges. Achieving gains in those areas may take moves to incorporate new manufacturing techniques, like a rumored move to a 10nm production process for the Snapdragon 830.
