For years, developers flocked to iOS with apps and games because of profitability. Device owners within the Apple ecosystem spent more money than anywhere else and that made advertisers target iOS too. All of that is changing now, though, as developers are seeing Android’s profitability become comparable to iOS in some areas.

The average revenue per user (ARPU) for Android games increased throughout 2014. When the year started, games available on Android had an ARPU that was 20% of iOS’. The year closed with that figure being at 65%. iOS kept its lead over Android; however, the glap is closing. This information comes from game marketing company DAU-UP. The firm also found that advertising costs are much lower (between 20-30%) on Android. Because of that, some Android games’ profitability could exceed iOS. One thing to remember here, too, is that this is about games and not Android apps as a whole.
