Ting Mobile, a Canadian-owned wireless carrier based in Mississippi, has reported plans to buy Blue Ridge Internetworks in Charlottesville, VA, and to eventually expand the local fiber optic network. According to Ting Mobile CEO Elliot Noss, the new offering when built out may best be described as “Google Fiber lite.” New broadband plans are expected to cost less than $100 per month and will be capable of supporting speeds of up to 1 GB per second.

Ting Mobile’s entry is another example of where the wired infrastructure in the U.S. is likely heading over the next few year. Google is probably seen as the leader in the space for fiber optic networks. However, as big as Google is, they can only tackle so many locations at once, leaving an opportunity for other, smaller companies to jump in to the market.

In the case of Ting Mobile and the Charlottesville location, Blue Ridge Internetworks already has about 35 miles of fiber cable deployed. Ting anticipates expanding that and by the first quarter of 2015, they hope to have around 12,000 homes hooked up. Noss indicates the company is looking at other locations as well where the deals will be “less in the way of acquisition and more in the way of public private partnership.”
