T-Mobile’s Un-carrier 8 is all about the Data Stash, basically a roll over data bucket

Share

In the good old days we had roll over SMS and minutes that would let you carry over unused portions of your plan and have access to them on the next cycle and beyond. T-Mobile is bringing it back again, but this time it is all about your data. In a nutshell, any unused data allotment you have left over at the end of your billing cycle will be added to your next bill cycle.

T-Mobile Uncarrier 8

Here is the basic run down of what this means for consumers:

  • Starting with your January bill cycle, Data Stash will be available to all T-Mobile postpaid Simple Choice customers.
  • Sign up for a postpaid Simple Choice Plan with 4G LTE data for your phone (minimum 3GB 4G LTE data) or tablet (minimum 1GB 4G LTE data).
  • Use your data all month to stream, surf, and download worry-free.
  • At the end of the month, all your unused 4G LTE data – rounded up to the nearest megabyte – rolls into your stash to be used any time in the next 12 months.

To get things off the ground in a big way, T-Mobile will drop 10GB of data into your Data Stash as an extra special gift. That 10GB will be a one time additional allotment that will expire at the end of 2015 if you don’t use it. Any unused data from each month will just be added to it. Now, any amount of unused Data Stash that gets added in each month is good for one year. This is also fairly important. As you acculturate your data over the year, the additional stash will fall off every 12 months versus completely zeroing out at the end of the year. What is left over in January 2015, will expire in January 2016. What you gain in February of 2015 will expire in February 2016 and so on. That basically gives you 1 for all your unused data to stash its self away for a rainy day. Of course, when that unused data from January 2015 falls off in January 2016 you will more than likely have unused data from January 2016 to replace it any ways.

This is really going to be a huge benefit for those that have specific set high-speed data limits on their account. Remember, T-Mobile does have data limits on the High-speed aspect, but once you hit that cap you just get slowed down some. Those rocking the 5GB package and only use 3 or 4 GB a month, will be able to build up the high-speed coverage fort hose more data intensive months, usually holiday months and particularly handy for tablet owners.

Another question that will easily arise will be how much will it cost to add the ability to stash my data. Everything benefit costs something, right? Data Stash will be enabled for all customers on Simple Choice plans that meet the above requirements.

“Like every Un-carrier move we make, Data Stash also came from listening to customers,” added Legere. “This year on Twitter, customers asked the carriers to create a program to roll data forward more than 40,000 times. So this isn’t rocket science. It’s just that we seem to be the only company in this industry that cares enough to listen. That’s fine by me.”

This isn’t just a single line benefit either. Data Stash will also be on family plans too giving families the opportunity to have access to left over high-speed data when it is needed most.

This offer won’t make be all that spectacular to those already rocking an unlimited plan with now high-speed caps. It is more so aimed at those users making their first jump to smartphones or for those that don’t feel they need unlimited data and are testing the waters on lower plans. Take a watch of the interview and announcement from John Legere below. Beware, John is an uncensored individual, which I personally like.

Anyone else out there finding this news exciting?
