Android is good for so many things and one of the more popular uses is in the kitchen. Aside from the obvious and simple tasks like keeping a timer while something bakes, you can also use it to find some really good recipes. In this roundup, we’ll take a look at the best Android cooking apps and Android recipe apps.
Allrecipes Dinner Spinner
[Price: Free]
Let’s start off with a classic, shall we? Allrecipes Dinner Spinner has been one of the go-to recipe apps for Android for years now and was among the first really reliable apps in that category. The dinner spinner is a classic because it lets you choose what ingredients you want and then serves up recipes based on those decisions. There are also seasonal recipes, instructional videos, and a dedicated shopping list to help you keep track of what you need from the store. It’s also free and free is good.
BigOven: 350,000+ Recipes
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
BigOven is another popular app that’s been around for a while. As it claims, there is access to over 350,000 recipes that range from the classic breakfast, lunch, and dinner to things like dessert, brunch, and other foods. You can save favorites, plan meals in advance, keep track of what you need on the shopping list, and find pretty much whatever it is that you’re looking for. The free version gives you all the basic features and has ads. The premium version adds some more features like private notes on recipes, a RecipeScan feature that lets you upload your written-down recipes, and more. It’s a very solid option.
ChefTap Recipe App
[Price: Free]
ChefTap Recipe App is an app that allows you to hunt for recipes across multiple platforms including Pinterest, Allrecipes, and others. You can import recipes from across the web to create and maintain your own personal catalog. Some other features include offline mode, various interface customization features, and the ability to edit recipes you import. You can have up to 50 recipes saved without an account. With a free account you can save up to 100. If you go pro, that becomes unlimited and you get device syncing.
Cookbook: Free recipes
[Price: Free]
As the name implies, Cookbook is a cookbook full of recipes that you get for free. The recipes are sorted in all sorts of different ways including by ethnicity, cooking method, and ingredients. It’s also one of the precious few apps on this list that has Android Wear support that might actually be useful. There is also a dedicated shopping list, calculated prep times so you can plan meals better, and reverse recipe searches. It’s not as involved as some of these others but it’s a solid free option.
Cookpad Recipes
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
Cookpad Recipes (previously known as Allthecooks) is another cookbook app with a lot of options. You can create your own cookbook one recipe at a time and it helps you find recipes that others have made. There is also recipe reviews you can read and even a forum you can sign up for and chat with other people who use the app. It has a well-designed user interface and it’s pretty easy to use. The feature set is a little basic but the app works very well and some people really like simplicity.
Food Network In The Kitchen
[Price: Free]
Having a cooking apps list without the Food Network almost seems like blasphemy. In the official Food Network cooking app, you’ll have access to thousands of recipes from a lot of celebrity chefs. It’s fairly well organized, has seasonal recipe updates, a shopping list, and the ability to bookmark and save recipes for later use. Recent updates have also started adding instructional videos for some recipes and we assume future updates will bring more.
Paprika Recipe Manager
[Price: $2.99]
Paprika Recipe Manager has been recommended by a lot of websites and we’re another one that’s going to do it. Some of the features of this app include a built-in web browser to search for recipes, a grocery list feature, the ability to enter in custom recipes and organize them into categories, and the ability to scale ingredients to a recipe for more or less people. There are also some basic nutrition features if you’re looking to watch your diet as well. It’s another more basic app but it gets the job done.
[Price: Free]
Websites like Pinterest were made for lists like these. Along with finding any number of other interesting things, you can also find a whole bunch of recipes. Using the app, you can find them and then pin them to your boards where you can find them later. Given the wide range of subject matter, there aren’t many features specifically for the home chef (like the shopping list, etc) but if you just want something simple where you can search and find recipes, then Pinterest has you covered and there are apps on this list that can grab those recipes if you need the more serious features.
Tumblr
[Price: Free]
Much like Pinterest, Tumblr is a huge network that allows you to search for practically anything and that includes recipes. You can follow people who post their own recipes or browse around and save the ones you like to your favorites. It’s not as organized as Pinterest is and there are a lot of NSFW kind of stuff there, but if you’re already a Tumblr user then it’s just a matter of finding the people who post about food along with your other interests.
What’s for Dinner? Recipes
[Price: Free]
What’s for Dinner? Recipes is another recipe app that keeps it simple. You’ll have the usual array of features like a grocery list and meal planning along with the ability to search many popular recipe websites. It even grabs from MyRecipe.com which is one of the few high-end recipe sites without a mobile app on Android (there is one on iOS). About the only bad part is the interface is fairly old and this app hasn’t been updated since 2012 which means that the next time I update this list, this app is probably getting taken off of it. So pick this up while it’s still relevant!
The Whole Pantry
[Price: $2.99]
The Whole Pantry is a hybird of a lifestyle and wellness guide and a recipe app. It comes with ten guides and 52 recipes which, admittedly, is a small amount of recipes. To make up for it, there is also a wealth of resources to finding recipes from other places that focus on specific dietary needs. You can find stuff for the paleo diet, vegan, and other diet styles that you need. There is also the all-important shopping list functionality and the ability to save recipes that you like. It focuses a lot on style and design and it shows because The Whole Pantry is a good looking app.
WTFSIMFD (Warning: NSFW)
[Price: Free]
Last up is WTFSIMFD and if you want to know what means, consult the image of the app icon above. It’s a little bit of a joke app that’s actually kind of helpful. If you don’t know what to make or know what you’re in the mood for, this app will give you some suggestions. Obviously, it’s not safe for work, school, or for kids but adults can get a giggle out of it while they figure out what to do for dinner. The suggestions are linked and if you click on them, it will take you to a recipe of that item. Is it vulgar? Yes it is but it is also useful and free.
