How to record and share a Slo-Mo video on the iPhone 5s, including Instagram!

If you’ve got an iPhone 5s, you have the ability to record slow motion video due to the 5s’ ability to record at up to 120 frames per second. For the most part, you record a slow motion video in the same way you would a regular video. You just need to make sure you’re in the right recording mode.

You can then share it with anyone you’d like or share it to services such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and more.

Here’s how:

  • How to create a slow motion video with the iPhone 5s
  • How to share a slow motion video to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and more
  • Why aren’t my slow motion videos working on Instagram and other services?

How to create a slow motion video with the iPhone 5s

  • Launch the Camera app from the Home screen of your iPhone 5s
  • Switch the slider along the bottom to Slo-Mo by swiping your finger to the right twice from the default photo mode.
  • Record the video you want to have a slow motion portion in just like you’d record a regular video.
  • Once the video is done recording, tap on the thumbnail in the bottom left hand corner to pull it up.
  • Here you can play the video and drag the sliders around in order to adjust what part of the video is actually slow motion. As always, you can move the bars around on each side to make the clip shorter as well.
  • That’s all there is to it. You’re now ready to share your slow motion video.

How to share a slow motion video via SMS, Facebook, YouTube, and more

  • Launch the Photos app from the Home screen of your iPhone 5s
  • Tap on the slow motion video you’d like to share in order to bring it up.
  • Now tap on the Share button in the lower left hand corner.
  • Choose the service you’d like to share with by tapping on it. You can also choose SMS, email, and many other options if you’d like to just share it with a small group of people or an individual.
  • Fill out any credentials or add any information for any appropriate service.
  • Tap on the Share or Publish button.
  • Why are my slow motion videos not working on Instagram and other services?

Some users are reporting that when they upload slow motion videos to certain services, the slow motion portion is not carrying over. This will be an issue for one of two reasons, either the service doesn’t support 120 FPS or you are not selecting to upload the HD version. With Facebook, use the native upload built into your iPhone 5s via the Photos app share option instead of the official app. This way you can change the default setting to HD. You can do this with YouTube natively as well.

With services like Facebook and YouTube, be sure to select the highest quality option you can. As long as you do, you shouldn’t have a problem with either of them playing the slow motion portions.

Services like Instagram require a little trickery in order to get a slow motion video to upload correctly. As a workaround with services that either don’t have a high def option or don’t recognize slow motion natively, email the clip to yourself first using the sharing steps above. Once you’ve done that, just save the emailed attachment in your Camera Roll. The new clip should be work on Instagram and other services that don’t recognize the native slow motion your iPhone stores.

It’s not the prettiest workaround in the world but it does seem to work. If you’ve found another trick, let us know!
