With the upcoming restrictions on cookies looming on the horizon, CDPs may seem even more valuable than they did before. The right customer data platform has the potential to truly harness the power of first-party data. It consolidates information in a way that can help numerous departments do their jobs better.It’s true that CDPs can hold the key to real insights that open the door to real profits. They’re especially helpful for linking departments in a company that may not always share information. The vast majority of stats prove that CDPs help marketers hit their objectives and improve customer satisfaction. But there is such a thing as putting too much value on a single profile. Consultant Krishen Iyer from MAIS Consulting has seen its pitfalls in real time.As easy as the CDP provider probably made it sound, real life isn’t as straightforward. See why these so-called golden records may be more nuanced than meet the eye. We’ll also look at how it can cause confusion for multiple customers.Accidental InterferencesIt’s worth noting that not all CDPs function in exactly the same way. What’s more, employees may not even realize that the settings and defaults are not what they expected. It can make tracking down an error all the more frustrating.For instance, let’s say that Joe orders a refrigerator through a major retailer and wants to send an alert to his roommate, Fred, about when and how it will be delivered. Joe enters Fred’s email address as the person to alert and then forgets all about the matter. However, unbeknownst to Joe, Fred already had an account with the retailer and Fred used a different email address to sign up. When the CDP merges those two accounts together, the alert might be sent to Fred’s signup email address. If he doesn’t check that account, the refrigerator delivery may have to be rescheduled for another day.Another major problem comes into play for people who purchase the same products for both business and personal use. The customer might get all of their messages sent to one email account. This would be frustrating if they specifically opened separate accounts to keep everything organized.If everything goes under one account, then it becomes necessary for the consumer to go through it all. They have to figure out which expenses went toward what. Or imagine if a job recruiting company sends a message about a job opening to a heavily monitored work email. This could potentially be more than a hassle. It could actively cause the recipient to get flagged by their boss.Finally, there are people like Iyer who work as consultants. They provide the same service for different clients through different emails. If the accounts are protected by two-factor authentication, a CDP might not allow the same phone number with multiple accounts. Krishen Iyer then has to then devise a workaround strategy that eats into the time he would otherwise use to serve his clients.Krishen Iyer on Rethinking the Art of the MergeBy now, it should be clear that the concept of one profile doesn’t always have the intended consequences. The extra steps and confusion can ruin rather than enhance the customer experience.This is frustrating for marketers because, of course, there are plenty of times when you will want to merge it all. For instance, if a car buyer is going to be loading several large dogs into their vehicle every day, this would ideally be information that gets incorporated into the buyer’s profile across all departments. So how can you figure out the best way forward?Better Frameworks for CDPsKrishen Iyer has been in digital marketing for two decades now. His expertise is born from a sincere interest in how technology can be adapted for the best results. He fully embraces the potential of CDPs, but he doesn’t want anyone to get too comfortable. As with all technology, its usefulness comes down to how it’s implemented. He encourages people to see the problem from a couple of key vantage points.DevicesYou’re likely already familiar with the basics of the CDP device framework:Initial data: The first request from a device allows you to create a profile that includes facts like the OS, location, and screen size. For instance, you know that the person made the request from an iPhone 14 Pro Max in Cleveland. From there, you can start segmenting for stronger marketing and sales tactics.Interest data: If the person makes multiple requests, you can start narrowing down their interests even more. Profiles become enriched with how the individual accesses content (e.g., videos vs. infographics) or what information they’re clicking on (e.g., women’s shoes size 7).Identifying data: Depending on the CDP and the way the person accessed the content, you may be able to identify who exactly is behind the screen. Now it’s possible to identify the profile with the actual person (or at least be reasonably certain of the connection). You can then streamline the messaging (e.g., send renewal notice to customer before subscription expires).PeopleThe people framework offers a more comprehensive understanding of the individual accessing the information. Krishen Iyer wants marketers to capture the device framework data and then really go in-depth from there. He wants people to shift away from the idea of understanding the person through a device and toward the imagination of a person’s real-life behaviors.For instance, a customer with a personal and a work email account may be trying to keep expenses separate. They may conduct most of their transactions through work on their Mac Book and most of their transactions through work on their iPad. Of course, sometimes there’s a crossover between the two devices if, say, the customer has to make an emergency order from home.In this case, you would need to divide a person based on their personas rather than by their individual personas. This can get rather complicated in practice in the case of multiple businesses. If a person is managing four separate businesses, a side hustle, and a personal account, you would need at least six different personas for them.While it’s impossible to imagine every possible scenario, there are ways to avoid improper merges when you shift more from the device framework and more to the person one. This is not to say that you can’t collect plenty of useful data from a device, only that you need both perspectives before you can truly improve the ROI of your messaging.Krishen Iyer in the NewsKrishen Iyer has always long been fascinated with where and how technology and other economic sectors meet. I’ve recently had a run of interesting devices land on my desk for review. The latest would have to be the Unihertz Jelly 2 SE. This small, and I mean small, Android phone has piqued my curiosity on multiple levels in the three weeks I’ve used it. Are these points mostly positive or negative? Let’s find out in this full review of the Jelly 2 SE.DesignMy immediate response to the Jelly 2 SE is it has a very pebble design. So much so, that I couldn’t help but pull out my old Palm Pre. This small smartphone is rounded on every portion that sits in your hand and really feels great to hold.The second is it’s TINY!! Like physically smaller than any other device I have in my home short of another webOS device, the HP Veer. Yep, that’s two Palm/webOS references, and we may not be done. This 3-inch display lends to a tiny footprint, for good or bad.With these references, I also couldn’t help but really want a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. One of the awesome things about the Palm series was that you didn’t have to sacrifice screen interactions every time you needed to type. The display was dedicated to just the content. With Unihertz’s lineup including the BlackBerry-inspired Titan series showing hardware keyboards, I’d love a generation of Jelly sliders.Set at the bottom of the display are dedicated capacitive touch buttons. This controls the good ole Back, Home, and Multitasking buttons from more tactile times. It’s an interesting touch to add physical keys, but it works with the small form factor. Having a bit of chin for these buttons is much better than taking up limited screen real estate.To the right side of the Jelly 2 SE are the power button, dedicated custom action button, SIM tray, and USB-C charging port. The opposite side houses just the volume rockers. The top of the Jelly 2 SE holds a 3.5mm headphone jack and IR sensor for controlling home devices like a TV or fan. 1 of 4 The customizable action button is a neat addition. This can be altered in Settings to perform an action like Flashlight or Assistant or launch your favorite apps. I’ve got it set to pull down the notification shade just because I think that one is fun.Around the back are the camera housing and a capacitive fingerprint scanner. For such a small package, Unihertz crammed a surprising amount of hardware. Internally, the unit is powered by a MediaTek A20 CPU, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of eMMC storage, and a 2000mAh battery pack.Daily UsageThis has been a mixed bag in my time with the Jelly 2 SE. It’s refreshing to have a phone that I’ve literally lost in my pocket or backpack. The pebble-like phone really can be taken with you and forgotten. Need to place a call or answer a quick text, then it’s there. You even have the phone apps that you’ve come accustomed to.The size does force your muscle memory to take a step back. The small form factor makes more intensive tasks like checking emails, scrolling Facebook/Instagram, or checking the news a bit more challenging. It’s not impossible like another recent review, but it will make you consciously question whether you are doing it out of necessity or just habit.Where it does differ from the similarly targeted Punkt phone is that it does still run every Android app you can download from the Play Store. I found still having my commute options like Android Auto with its accessorial options for navigation and audio apps, a much easier selling point for a larger majority of buyers.Speaking of Android Auto, despite the engineering feat of its internals, the Jelly 2 SE still struggles with lag. While this isn’t exclusive to the Jelly, and it takes a ton of resources to run Android Auto, I thought it worth a mention. Especially when using wireless connections, you may find the interface takes some time to catch up on your stereo while the Jelly 2 SE pushes thru the transitions.The sluggish performance can be seen in normal interactions with the phone as well. The tiny Jelly 2 SE packs a little punch when it comes to processing. You will have to wait for some apps to load, the phone to completely unlock, or the camera to focus.CameraLet’s be honest. The camera on the Jelly 2 SE isn’t great. If you’re coming from a high-end Android device, this may be a deal breaker. This is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of like a Moto G Play from a few years back in quality.The camera app is a pretty stock experience similar to Nokia, Moto, and Pixels. The results can be OK in good lighting and little motion. As soon as either of those elements breaks down, so do the results. Honestly, at the $160 price tag, I’m perfectly fine with this not being a top shooter. The whole idea is to enjoy life at the moment, not snap tons of photos.Battery LifeBattery life is just enough as well. The small 2000mAh would be terrible inside any other Android device. You’d be looking for an outlet at lunch. However, I was able to just sneak out a full day in most instances while testing the Unihertz Jelly 2 SE.  I did have some days where I pushed it with several hours attached to Bluetooth devices and had to get out my charger before I would normally call it a night.Speaking of charging. This has been a mixed bag. I’ve found using a charger is not universal with the Jelly 2 SE. I have multiple Anker chargers and cables that the Jelly simply refused to recognize. My running theory established in my testing is that if the charger pushes more than 5 volts, the unit doesn’t allow it to charge.ConclusionUnihertz has built a unique, small Android phone with the Jelly 2 SE. It’s a simple way to put it, but it’s true. You have to be completely aware of that and the limited experience it creates when taking the shot to purchase the Jelly.Despite all that, I do think there’s a market for it and certain users will want this phone. “Did anybody bring a speaker?” is a question my friends and I constantly ask each other when we hang out. Cookouts, tailgates, house parties, golf outings, and everything in between are improved with a high-quality, portable speaker to jam with. It wasn’t until recently that I realized: I’m never the friend with the speaker.Determined to change my destiny, I looked for a new Bluetooth speaker to try. During my search, the HiFuture Ripple caught my eye. The HiFuture Ripple is a portable Bluetooth speaker comparable in size to a can of Arizona iced tea. My USB-C charging speaker is a deep blue, weighs no more than five pounds, and has a loop of paracord on the end to be tied to a backpack or belt loop.Sound QualityThe most important quality of any speaker, in my opinion, is how good it sounds. Connecting the HiFuture Ripple to my phone and playing a song for the first time, I was pleased to hear the clean, high-quality sound that I expected. The songs I listen to generally tend to lean a little top-heavy, and I am satisfied that the tweeter in this speaker doesn’t seem to lose quality in its upper range. After a couple of songs from my own playlist cycled through I queued up Starboy by The Weeknd to try something with some more bass. Listeners who love to listen to their music with a lot of bass may not be able to get quite as much oomph from the low end of this speaker as they may prefer, but this speaker met my expectations by keeping its balanced mix while maintaining a quality sound even for bass-heavy songs.Battery LifeThe HiFuture Ripple comes out of the box with a charge, which is satisfying. The claim is that the battery on this speaker will last 12 hours of listening, and I have no reason to believe anything different. I didn’t listen to music for 12 hours straight, but after listening to music for one hour, 12 times, the HiFuture Ripple still had battery charge left.One thing I did notice was that the speaker did take a long time to charge once the battery was almost gone. This was more inconvenient than it was a problem, and I was happy to charge it for a long time considering how long the battery lasted.DesignSometimes the look of a speaker is almost as important as it sounds. Especially for a portable speaker, I would much rather be carrying around a sleek, nice-looking speaker than something thick and clunky. I am happy to say that the HiFuture Ripple has a nice look refined enough to fit in at a house party, but the mesh on the exterior means it also won’t feel out of place at an outdoor BBQ. Although its mostly round, the speaker has a ridge and two small rubber feet to keep it sitting properly and prevent it from rolling around. The buttons are the same color as the speaker so they are only visible up close, and I am a big fan of the heavily vibrating woofers on the sides. No lights or any gadgets to this speaker, which I think keeps it from looking tacky.ConclusionOverall, the HiFuture Ripple speaker met all my expectations. It looks nice, sounds great, and can play music all day. If there was one thing to complain about, I suppose I wish that it charged faster. With my HiFuture Ripple in tow, I am excited to start being my new self as the guy who brings the speaker to the party.
