  • Use NordVPN to watch from anywhere
  • Hurricanes vs Sixers: Fri, Jan 23, 3.15am ET / 8.15am GMT / 7.15pm AEDT

Sydney lost the Qualifier but earned another bite of the cherry by finishing second in the Big Bash League standings. Their safeguard is a BBL Challenger clash with Hobart, who very nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory in a brief but thrilling Knockout.

The Hurricanes, who came third in the standings, were cruising towards the Challenger before a nightmare last over gave Melbourne the opportunity to snatch an unlikely comeback right at the death. Mitch Owen, however, shut up shop with the final ball of a match that was drastically shortened due to rain.

It feels fitting, then, that the league meeting between Sydney and Hobart at the SCG a fortnight ago was washed out with Steve Smith on 19.

All too often the Australia vice-captain has been the lone man holding back the tide. Sam Curran has had his moments, most notably the half-century that secured their place in the Qualifier, but he’s now departed for international duty. The Sixers need more from Pakistan skipper Babar Azam.

Ben McDermott captained Hobart for their midweek victory, and will continue to if Nathan Ellis isn’t able to recover from his unspecified injury. Regardless of the Sixers’ issues with the bat, with Mitchell Starc now in the BBL flow the Hurricanes are going to be up against it.
