This feel-good Prime Video movie stars two of my favorite comedy characters ever — and is my holiday pick

William ‘Bill’ Preston Esq and Theodore ‘Ted’ Logan are two of my very favorite comedy characters, played by the impossibly young Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as completely air-headed slacker teens. They, and the films they appear in, are very, very stupid – and very very funny.

With Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey arriving on Prime Video this month it’s a great addition to your holiday watch list. Is it as good as the first movie, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure? Not quite. But it retains its warmth and charm and delivers a feel-good and very funny treat.

Why you’ll enjoy this excellent adventure

It’s a very good idea to watch the first movie before you see this sequel, because it does assume you’re familiar with how two lovable lunk-heads ended up hailed as heavy metal gods by future Earth inhabitants despite having no discernible brains or musical talent. And the first movie is worth seeing anway because it’s really funny.

This second outing is funny too, with the titular duo traveling through Heaven and Hell, battling the Grim Reaper and trying to avoid Terminator-esque assassins sent from the 27th century to kill them.

Empire Magazine said that the film is “every bit as acutely observed as its predecessor – all sorts of verbal asides and background visual gags supplement the free-flowing main jokes, Winter & Reeves (Bill & Ted) achieve new levels as teenage morons and the supporting cast (notably Sadler as the foppish Grim Reaper) play out the ridiculousness with the dryest of Pythonesque straight faces.”

The New York Times called it “amusing but sloppy”, while Roger Ebert wrote that “This is a movie that thrives on the dense-witted idiocy of its characters, two teenage dudes who go on amazing journeys through time and space with only the dimmest perception that they are not still playing video games… This movie is light as a feather and thin as ice in spring, but what it does, it does very nicely.”

Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey is streaming on Prime Video now.
