Supergirl trailer #1 wish list: 3 things I want to see in the DCU movie’s first teaser – and one I don’t

It’s almost time. The first trailer for Supergirl is set to be released before the end of this week and, if it wasn’t obvious by now, I’m incredibly excited for its arrival.

With the DC Universe (DCU) movie adapting – or, at the very least, being heavily inspired by – the ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ graphic novel series, those of us who’ve read it will know what to expect from Supergirl. It’s likely, then, that this forthcoming teaser won’t hold any major surprises for fans of the graphic novel series either.

Nonetheless, there are certain things that the DCU Chapter One film’s inaugural trailer has to include to further whet our appetites. Here are three things I want to see in said teaser – and one I don’t.

1. A better sense of Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El

Ever since Milly Alcock won the race to play Supergirl in the DCU, I’ve been excited and intrigued to see how she’ll tackle one of the more complicated individuals created by DC Comics.

We already got a flavor of this iteration of the character in 2025’s Superman movie. However, while Alcock’s scene-stealing cameo in Superman was all I needed to have full confidence in Supergirl‘s next big-screen outing, it was only a mere glimpse of her.

Considering most viewers won’t have read ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’, some took exception to her being depicted as an alcohol-loving party girl. A few even suggested it was another outdated example of how female superheroes/characters have been portrayed in films through the decades.

The reality, though, is this is only one side of how Kara is represented in ‘Woman of Tomorrow’. Without going into specifics about this comic book series, she’s a multifaceted character who’s not only as altruistic as her Kryptonian cousin, but also more interesting by virtue of her traumatic past and rough-around-the-edges persona.

Despite her tender years, Alcock has shown she has the on-screen presence and acting talent to play captivating multidimensional characters. House of the Dragon, Sirens, and Upright are just three examples that prove as much. So, while I hope Supergirl‘s first teaser is full of the rebellious overtones, thrilling action, compelling melodrama, and gorgeous sci-fi visuals as ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ is, I’m also expecting it to give us a better sense of Alcock’s take on the titular hero.

2. Show us Jason Momoa’s Lobo

Jason Momoa texted James Gunn to ask he could play Lobo in the DCU (Image credit: DC Comics)

We know that Jason Momoa, who played Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU), will achieve the lifelong goal of playing Lobo in a DC live-action project following his casting as the fan-favorite mercenary in Supergirl. (You can read more about this character and everyone else who’ll appear in my Supergirl cast and character guide.)

What’s unclear, though, is how he’ll fit into the story. After all, Lobo was originally set to have a small but significant role in ‘Woman of Tomorrow’, with its writer Tom King confirming as much in February 2023 during a chat with comicbook.com. However, Lobo was dropped after editors Brittany Holzherr and Jamie Rich told King to cut him from the plot.

Given Lobo will feature in one of 2026’s most exciting new movies, how will he factor into Supergirl‘s story? And how might his inclusion alter the graphic novel’s narrative?

Speaking in June, DCU co-chief James Gunn said Lobo will play a vital role, adding: “[Supergirl:] Woman of Tomorrow… is a bunch of little stories and we needed to create one through-line, one three-act, more traditional story. So Lobo helps us to do that.”

I’d be surprised if we learn how Lobo fits into Supergirl‘s slightly retooled story in this teaser. Still, it would be good to see Momoa decked out in Lobo’s classic costume, and sporting the bounty hunter’s traditional albino appearance.

3. Give us a general story overview…

The story brief for ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ isn’t a convoluted one. I’ll refrain from outlining it here – those of you do who want to know more should read the plot section of my dedicated Supergirl guide.

While I don’t foresee the teaser going heavy on the plot details front, it would be a wise move to give people some idea about what to expect. Sure, a teaser doesn’t need to reveal anything significant about a movie’s plot synopsis – Superman‘s first trailer certainly didn’t when it took flight last December.

Still, DC Studios’ next feature film is based on a specific graphic novel. So, if Gunn and company don’t want people to go searching for more on its story and potentially encounter major spoilers (more on this in a moment), it would be best to include some plot details in the trailer.

4. …but stay far away from story spoilers

If Supergirl’s teaser contains spoilers, we riot (Image credit: James Gunn/Instagram)

I’ll preface this by saying there’s very little chance that Supergirl‘s teaser will come with huge story spoilers attached.

That said, there are some incredibly significant moments that happen very early on in ‘Woman of Tomorrow’. In fact, one of the literary work’s biggest talking points – don’t worry, I won’t say it is here – actually occurs in chapters 1 and 2 of the eight-part series.

Thanks to the magical process known as editing, it’ll be easy to avoid that and other major story beats in the superhero flick’s first trailer. Even so, it’s in Gunn and co.’s best interests to withhold the comic book series’ biggest surprises until the movie is out in theaters. There’ll be enough to discuss about Supergirl‘s official teaser in the days and weeks ahead as we pore over the film’s first footage without including story spoilers. So, please, don’t ruin them ahead of time.
