The 3rd Ashes Test from Adelaide represents the last chance for England to return home with the famous urn in their luggage. Two-nil down with three matches to go, Ben Stokes’ side must win out from here but look increasingly bedraggled and devoid of confidence, with Australia determined to put the final nail in the Bazball coffin.
The hosts will again start as favorites after back-to-back eight-wicket victories, not least with the news that captain and attack leader Pat Cummins has been passed fit to resume his personal wizardry agains the Poms. The 32-year-old has taken the wicket of England star batter Joe Root 11 times and will combine with Mitchell Starc – 16 wickets this series and a counterattacking 2nd Test 77 with the bat to his name – to cause more heart palpitations in the opposition ranks. Usman Khawaja is also fit again, though whether the top order batter will squeeze back into the XI after Jacob Weatherald and Travis Head’s fine form remains to be seen. Nathan Lyon’s return at the spin-friendly Oval is a guarantee.
Stokes spoke of Australia being “no country for weak men” after the 2nd Test defeat in Brisbane and has encouraged his side to “show a bit of dog” in the buildup to Adelaide. England must win, and the Oval’s smaller boundaries could help their attacking approach, and keep doing so for the rest of the tour to achieve the seemingly impossible – the great Don Bradman’s Australia in the 1936/37 Ashes are the only side to come from 2-0 down in Test series to win. The visitors have made one change, with Josh Tongue replacing the struggling Gus Atkinson in the bowling attack, while the pressure will be on Harry Brook after giving his wicket away in both Tests.
