7 new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and more this weekend (December 12)

The best streaming services are still making sure we’ve got lots to watch as we count down the days to the 2025 holiday period.

Indeed, it’s been another bumper week of new movies and shows. In fact, the competition has been so fierce again that the final season of kid-friendly Star Wars TV series Young Jedi Adventures and Amazon’s latest Spanish young adult romance movie Tell Me Softly haven’t even made the list. That tells you all you need to know about the strength of this weekend’s line-up.

But I digress. Let’s waste no more time diving into what’s worth streaming before Monday shows up once more. – Tom Power, senior entertainment reporter

Wake Up, Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Netflix)

What says “it’s almost Christmas” like the family arguing over a whodunnit movie? I guarantee that you won’t be able to guess the culprit in Knives Out 3, aka Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

If you’re a traditionalist when it comes to your crime capers, Knives Out 3 is the story in the trilogy made for you. Even if you aren’t, it’s undoubtedly Benoit Blanc’s (Daniel Craig) most successful outing yet.

There are darker forces at play this time – without giving too much away, it’s an Easter Sunday resurrection gone wrong. New clergyman Jud (Josh O’Connor) is our real standout character, while the church’s nosey secretary Martha (Glenn Close) is giving full pantomime levels of internal breakdown. Check out my Knives Out 3 review for more on why it’s the series’ best entry yet.

Many secrets are being closely guarded… but can you guess what they are before you stream it on Netflix? – Jasmine Valentine, entertainment reporter

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 (Disney+)

Our favorite demigod is back in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. After a very successful first run and receiving a solid Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, we now move onto the plot of Rick Riordan’s second book, aka ‘The Sea of Monsters’.

The Disney+ series is arguably the best adaptation we’ve ever had, and it’s been a joy revisiting a book series I enjoyed as a teenager years ago. This season you can expect more monsters, even bigger stunts, and some exciting new arrivals.

The first two episodes are streaming now and it’s worth watching them back to back. This has the potential to be better than season 1 and I’m already invested. – Lucy Buglass, senior entertainment writer

F1: The Movie (Apple TV)

The final big Apple TV release of the year, F1: The Movie has finally zoomed onto the tech giant’s streaming platform. And, after earning critical and commercial acclaim upon its initial theatrical release, it’s taken pole position on my to-watch list this weekend.

The Apple and Warner Bros. venture stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a Formula 1 title also-ran who comes out of retirement to try and finally win the World Championship. He ends his 30-year exile to help his former teammate’s ailing team, too, which counts Damson Idris’ passionate up-and-comer Joshua Pearce among its talented roster.

A thrilling sports drama that gets you as close to the action as humanly possible, the latest feature flick from Top Gun: Maverick director Joe Kozinski is not only one of the best Apple TV movies of all-time, but one of the greatest films of 2025. Race to your couch and stream it ASAP. – TP

Merv (Prime Video)

It’s not Christmas unless you’ve watched at least one heart-warming rom-com, so why not take a chance on this new Prime Video film starring Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox?

Merv is guaranteed to pull on your heartstrings, because at the centre of this feel-good tale is a scruffy rescue terrier called Gus who just wants his owners back together so life can return to normal. In an effort to lift Gus’ spirits, his separated owners take him on a getaway to Florida, but could the trip end up mending their own broken hearts, too?

Dog movies have a habit of ripping our hearts out, but this is one of the most wholesome of the new Prime Video movies, making it ideal for anyone who wants to root for this pooch to get his tail wagging again. – Amelia Schwanke, senior entertainment editor

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour | The End of an Era (Disney+)

Are you ready for it? You’ll be enchanted by new Taylor Swift docuseries The End of an Era so much that’ll you want to binge it forever and always (sorry, I’ll stop now).

Not only are we getting a brand-new cut of the Eras Tour movie that finally includes ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, but the six-part docuseries will finally let us in on exactly how it all came together.

Think how Taylor came up with hiding in a mop cart to get her on stage, that surprise Travis Kelce performance during Wembley Night 3, and just how the woman keeps coming up with so many incredible Easter eggs. The life of a showgirl, this truly is (sorry, I couldn’t resist). – JV

Roofman (Paramount+)

A well-mannered convicted thief who escapes prison and hides out in a Toys ‘R’ Us store for six months, only to fall in love with one of the sales associates, is not a story you come across every day.

It’s easy to see why director Derek Cianfrance was drawn to the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, which ultimately inspired him to make Roofman. The new Paramount+ movie has got all the makings of a thrilling crime drama with an intimate romance at its core, offering the deep character study that the filmmaker is known for.

As we noted in our Roofman review, leads Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst bring the story vividly to life, their unflinching stares communicating volumes without a single word. It’s an engaging watch that’s likely to surprise anyone unfamiliar with the true story. – AS

Wizkid: Long Live Lagos (HBO Max)

Described as “an intimate and heart-thumping documentary”, this HBO Max movie follows Nigerian singer Wizkid’s journey to global stardom. Through its 90-minute runtime, you can expect to see personal scenes, live shows, and an exploration of his impact on cultural perceptions.

The movie was directed by Karam Gill, who has made other documentaries focusing on musicians like Marshmello and Lil Baby. Gill has also directed some of Marshmello’s music videos throughout the years.

If you’re a fan of Wizkid or keen to discover some new music this weekend, why not dive into Wizkid: Long Live Lagos? You might learn a thing or two along the way. – LB
