4K Blu-ray fans, listen up! The Criterion Collection is having a huge sale over at Amazon ahead of Black Friday, where most of its 4K discs are 50% off.
There are some excellent movies featured in this sale, some of which feature in our Blu-ray Bounty monthly column, where we review the best new 4K discs and how they highlight home theaters. If you’re a 4K Blu-ray fan looking for a Black Friday deal, this is it!
Highlights include Seven Samurai, an influential classic that paved the way for action movies such as Star Wars, with Criterion’s stunning 4K restoration creating strong contrast and exceptional detail. It’s a personal favorite that I have in my own collection.
Double Indemnity is another Hollywood classic that influenced modern filmmaking for noir, thriller and action movies going forward. Another superb restoration from Criterion gives the movie a crisp monochrome makeover that pairs well with the best OLED TVs. This is easily one of the best 4K restorations I’ve seen.
Chunking Express comes from director Wong Kar-wai and is a staple of Hong Kong cinema. It gets a fresh uplift on 4K, but is also an excellent way for home theater speakers or the best soundbars to flex their muscles thanks to its immersive DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack. During my testing, the market scenes actually made me feel like I was there when played through a multi-box soundbar system.
Thief is director Michael Mann’s debut and an underrated crime classic that looks stunning in 4K, with upscaled textures and powerful contrast breathing new life into this movie.
