How to cancel Proton VPN

There are two main ways to cancel a Proton VPN paid plan, though the process isn’t quite as straightforward as with some competitors. You can either contact customer support or cancel manually through your account dashboard.

Option 1: Cancel via customer support

  1. Log in to your Proton VPN account dashboard.
  2. Click “Chat with us” or the chat icon to start a conversation.
  3. Tell the agent that you’d like to cancel your plan or downgrade to a free account.
  4. Give a short reason for cancelling when asked.

Option 2: Cancel manually

  1. Go to your Subscription tab in the Proton VPN dashboard.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and click “Downgrade account.”
  3. Confirm your choice to stop your paid subscription or move to the free plan.

If you subscribed through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or Amazon Appstore, you’ll need to cancel directly through that platform’s Subscriptions page.

Even if you cancel manually, keep in mind that refund requests must be sent to Proton VPN’s customer support team.

How to get a refund from Proton VPN

All Proton VPN paid plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee, giving you time to test the service risk-free. If you cancel within this window, you can claim a full refund. Once the 30 days have passed, refunds are no longer available.

Keep in mind that refunds are only offered for payments made by credit or debit card, PayPal, or Bitcoin. Payments made with cash or a bank transfer aren’t eligible.

To request a refund, contact Proton VPN’s customer support through live chat or the online support form. Include your registered email address, date of purchase, payment method, and a short reason for your request. This helps the team process your refund faster.

If you’re subscribed to a Proton Unlimited plan, refunds are prorated, meaning the refunded amount is reduced by the days you’ve already used in your current billing cycle. Once your request is approved, the refund will be issued to your original payment method, usually within a few business days.
