The Elder Scrolls 6 is real and we’re here to tell you all about it

The RPG that everyone has been waiting for is in the works, but it could be some time before we can all play it.

It’s been a decade since the last mainline Elder Scrolls games released and since that time Bethesda has focused its efforts elsewhere, mostly leaving it to ZeniMax Online Studios to helm The Elder Scrolls Online. Aside from a couple of mobile games and Skyrim VR, The Elder Scrolls Online is the biggest and best way to get your Elder Scrolls fix as of late. That’s set to change. At E3 2018 Bethesda unveiled The Elder Scrolls 6 in an incredibly short teaser trailer. Short as it was, it did the job of getting a generation of fans hyped for Skyrim’s true successor.

We don’t know a ton of concrete information about The Elder Scrolls 6 yet, but we’re keeping track of credible rumors, leaks, and teases that Bethesda feeds us until we learn more specifics. Here’s everything we know so far about The Elder Scrolls 6 for PS5 — provided it does come to Sony’s console after Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda.

The Elder Scrolls 6 When will it release?

Bethesda has not announced a release date for The Elder Scrolls 6. When it was revealed in 2018 the company hinted that it was still several years away from launch, with the development team hard at work on Starfield, the studio’s new IP. Starfield is set to come out first and we still don’t have a release date for that either. Given the pandemic and all of the video game delays that have been happening as of late, I’d say you shouldn’t expect The Elder Scrolls 6 for at least a few more years. And definitely not this year.

The Elder Scrolls 6 Is it coming to PS5?

It’s unknown whether The Elder Scrolls 6 will make it to PS5. Bethesda didn’t name any consoles during the E3 announcement, likely because the company knew TES 6 wouldn’t hit last-generation and it couldn’t out next-gen consoles at the time. But this likely played into the company’s favor: it didn’t commit itself to a multiplatform release prior to Bethesda’s acquisition. Now that it’s part of Xbox Game Studios under Microsoft, it would make sense to keep the game Xbox exclusive… but that also may not happen.

Xbox head Phil Spencer is on the record saying that the company will evaluate which future games come to which platforms on a “case by case” basis. This could indicate that he’s open to the idea of releasing The Elder Scrolls 6 on PS5. Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo are a couple of other Bethesda-published games that are coming to PS5 due to previous deals in place with Sony before Bethesda was bought.

I personally wouldn’t be surprised if The Elder Scrolls 6 were a timed exclusive on Xbox Series X before making its way to PS5, but that’s entirely speculation on my part. The series just seems too big with a pre-existing audience on PlayStation that you don’t want to alienate. At the same time, you don’t spend $7.5 billion for nothing, which is what Microsoft shelled out to purchase ZeniMax Media.

What is The Elder Scrolls 6?

The Elder Scrolls 6 is the next main entry in the popular fantasy open-world RPG series. The previous games are considered to be some of the best RPGs on PS4 or any console, and the 6th game could surely become one of the best PS5 games. The series is known for its long history and lore spanning thousands of years, along with the freedom it gives players to do almost anything and become anyone. Because each entry isn’t always an exact continuation of the previous, it’s hard to speculate what the story will be like.

Bethesda hasn’t confirmed where The Elder Scrolls 6 will take place, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any clues out there. Todd Howard has stated that its brief reveal trailer hints at the location, which many have speculated to be High Rock. Another tease from Bethesda that aired shortly before New Year’s hinted at the setting of Hammerfell, which directly borders High Rock.

Regions that the series has yet to properly explore (outside of The Elder Scrolls Online) include Black Marsh, Valenwood, and Elsweyr, though their respective topographies are much different than what we saw in the reveal trailer.
