The Drowning tells the story of a woman named Jodie Walsh (played Jill Halfpenny) who lost her young son Tom nine years ago while at a lakeside family outing. After first going missing, Tom was later presumed to have drowned in the lake.
The new miniseries picks up in the present day where Jodie finds herself broke and single after her ex-husband left her for her best friend. In an effort to save her struggling business, Jodie goes to deliver an important pitch. However, she becomes distracted when she sees a teenage boy that bears a close resemblance to her dead son Tom.
Jodie then follows the boy to school where she discovers that his name is Daniel and he has no recollection of her whatsoever. With her interest piqued, Jodie decides to masquerade as a music teacher at Daniel’s school in order to get close with him. How far will Jodie go to find out if Daniel is really her son Tom?
