What you need to know

  • The latest Google Search feature will help you learn more about the websites that appear in your search results.
  • You will have to tap on the menu icon next to search results to find out more about the website and where the information is coming from.
  • The feature is rolling out today on desktop, mobile web, and the Google app on Android for users in the U.S.

Google has announced a new feature that will let you learn more about your search results. The search giant says the feature is aimed at helping users easily find more information about sites in search results that they may not be familiar with. Instead of performing another search to find out about those sites, you can now tap on the menu icon next to search results to find out more about the website.

Explaining how the feature will help users, JK Kearns, Product Manager, Search, wrote in a blog post:

These descriptions will provide the most up-to-date verified and sourced information available on Wikipedia about the site. If it’s a site you haven’t heard of before, that additional information can give you context or peace of mind, especially if you’re looking for something important, like health or financial information.

Google is relying on Wikipedia’s open editing model to provide information about “tens of millions of sites on the web.” In case Wikipedia doesn’t have a description available for a website, Google will show you basic information such as the date it was first indexed. For results such as job listings and local business listings organized by Google, you’ll be shown a brief description about how that information is sourced. Additionally, Google is also starting to show if your connection to the website is secure through the HTTPS protocol.

The feature is now rolling out to users in the U.S. in English on desktop, mobile web, and the Google App on Android.
