What you need to know

  • Google admitted the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are on their way this fall.
  • Because of 5G’s limited rollout, the phones will only be available in nine countries.
  • The Pixel 4a is essentially the Google flagship in four countries, including India, Spain, Italy and Singapore.

Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a (5G) will only be available in the following countries: United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia.

That’s the fine print you see on select teaser pages of the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 shared with some press earlier today. While the Pixel 4a is available in 13 countries, four of those countries — India, Spain, Italy, and Singapore — will reportedly not be getting Google’s 5G lineup this year. That leaves the Pixel 4a as essentially the flagship phone in those markets, a bizarre and limiting choice for many consumers who just want a Google phone.

The Pixel 4 series was also limited in its availability, largely because the phones’ Soli radar needed local government approval in each market. That won’t be the case for either the Pixel 4a 5G or Pixel 5, as neither device reportedly has the motion-tracking technology included, so the limited availability is likely tethered to the maturity of a market’s 5G networks.
