Another month, another security update.
What you need to know
- The August 2020 security patch is official and rolling out to devices.
- There are the usual bug fixes that we expect every month.
- Not much else is new, not even in terms of new Pixel features.
The start of a new month is something a lot of people look forward to, and in the Android space, it gives us a new security patch from Google. These patches are rolled out to ensure devices stay as up-to-date and secure as can be, so while they aren’t always exciting, they are important.
This month’s update is another snoozer, offering the usual array of framework, media framework, and system fixes that we expect every month. MediaTek and Qualcomm components also get the normal round of updates, with nothing out-of-the-blue being present.
Google sometimes uses these monthly patches to roll out Pixel-specific fixes and features, but that doesn’t look to be the case with this particular patch. If Google is working on anything new software-wise, we’ll likely see those things be held off until the Pixel 5 later this year.
Factory images for the August 2020 patch are already available, but if you don’t feel like manually flashing it onto your device, you can also just wait for the over-the-air update to come through.
