The sun sets for the PlayStation 4 in the land of the rising sun.

What you need to know

  • Ghost of Tsushima is a new IP developed by Sucker Punch Productions.
  • Ghost of Tsushima released on July 17, 2020 for the PS4.
  • PlayStation shared that over 2.4 million copies of Ghost of Tsushima were sold in its first three days after launch.
  • This makes Ghost of Tsushima the fastest-selling new IP from PlayStation.

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Tsushima is a samurai adventure title that tasks player with pushing back against the Mongol invaders. Today, PlayStation announced that Ghost of Tsushima has sold over 2.4 million copies in its first three days.

With these sales, Ghost of Tsushima is now the fastest-selling new IP from PlayStation first-party. The Last of Us Part 2 remains the fastest-selling exclusive overall, with over 4 million copies sold in its first three days.

For context, Sucker Punch’s previous title, Infamous Second Son, took nine days to sell a million copies in 2014. While there were far less PS4 owners at that time, it’s still worth noting.

Ghost of Tsushima is the last major first-party title from Sony Worldwide Studios that’s being released for the PS4. Moving forward, those teams are going to be working on PS5 titles. We’ll have to wait and see if and how Ghost of Tsushima gets enhanced for the PS5.

If you haven’t picked up Ghost of Tsushima yet, you can check out our review from PlayStation lead Jennifer Locke right here. She writes that “Ghost of Tsushima has a solid foundation that is definitely deserving of a sequel on PS5. I think Sucker Punch has a new franchise on its hands. The studio already nailed the combat, in my opinion, now it just needs to work a little more on the open-world aspects.”

Becoming the Ghost is exceptionally fun

Ghost of Tsushima is a great samurai game, but its open-world could use some work. The combat and Jin’s personal journey to becoming the Ghost are the real hooks here, and Sucker Punch thankfully nails those aspects.
