What you need to know

  • Facebook has announced screen sharing for iOS and Android.
  • It works in both Messenger and Messenger Rooms.
  • You’ll be able to share with up to eight other videos in Messenger group video calls, or up to 16 if you’re using a Messenger Room.

Facebook has now brought screen sharing to its Android and iOS Messenger apps, allowing users to share their displays with others while on video calls.

“Screen sharing allows people to instantly share their screen with friends and family one-on-one or in a group video call with up to eight people and up to 16 people in Rooms while using Messenger on their mobile devices,” Facebook’s Nora Micheva, Product Manager, Messenger said, “We know people are trying to stay connected more than ever and screen sharing is the latest feature we’re rolling out to bring people closer together.”

Here’s how screen sharing would look when it rolls out:

Facebook says you’ll be able to share with up to eight people on a group video call. It’s also brought this feature to Messenger Rooms where the limit is up to 16 people.

The development of the new screen sharing feature was in part accelerated by the social isolation experienced globally this year.

Facebook and other video-chat/video-conferencing app makers have seized the moment to cultivate brand loyalty, offering more tantalizing and alluring features in the hopes that users remain loyal when the crisis passes. Only time, not feature-set, can tell who the winners would be.
