Best answer: Yes, Mint Mobile customers are now able to use the T-Mobile 5G network the same way they would use LTE. No special plans or fees are required and customers just need a 5G capable phone.

  • LTE and 5G service on T-Mobile’s network: Mint Mobile (From $15 per month at Mint Mobile)
  • 5G capable and available unlocked: Samsung Galaxy S20 ($800 at Microsoft)

Thank the New T-Mobile network for 5G on Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile is based on the T-Mobile network and previously only used the LTE network for its phones. Recently, Mint Mobile started officially supporting 5G on all of its plans at no additional cost. While some people reported earlier that 5G compatible phones would connect to 5G on Mint Mobile, it hasn’t been officially supported until recently.

Mint Mobile’s 5G network works the same way as the T-Mobile network, with the majority of coverage coming from T-Mobile’s expansive low-band 600MHz deployment. This low-end network doesn’t offer speeds too different from LTE but given its great coverage, it’s a solid start that keeps people connected to 5G as much as possible. The network is also being given extra capacity in dense urban and suburban areas with a 2.5GHz mid-band deployment on the spectrum T-Mobile got from its purchase of Sprint.

Millimeter-wave, high-band 5G is available in a few dense areas and even a few indoor areas like sports stadiums. This network can handle many more connections than the others thanks to having a vast amount of spectrum available in the high band. Coverage is much weaker as a result making it really only practical for small areas that need a boost.

5G works on any T-Mobile compatible 5G phone, so if you have an unlocked Galaxy S20 5G, you can get connected on Mint Mobile. Currently, Mint Mobile only sells the Galaxy S20 5G and the OnePlus 8 5G directly but thanks to growing number of unlocked 5G phones compatible with the T-Mobile network, you have quite a few options with Mint Mobile 5G.
