5-year old Fairphone 2 gets update to Android 9

Share

Usually smartphones of 5 years old don’t get that much attention and love anymore. At Fairphone they do it just a little bit differently. They just released a beta of Android 9 for the Fairphone 2.

Who remembers 2015? Volkswagen was caught at Dieselgate, Sweden won the Eurovision Song Contest and Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-sitting monarch of the United Kingdom. 2015 was also the year in which Fairphone announced the Fairphone 2. A smartphone that you can repair yourself to a large extent. The device was announced with Android 5.1 Lollipop. And now a beta of Android 9 is ready.

Now it’s easy to say that Fairphone, with its limited product range, also doesn’t need to make many updates. Nothing and nobody obliges Fairphone to release the update. So it is very neat what they do here. Especially because the device is not even available new anymore. The announcement the company made on Twitter can therefore count on many thanks.

Settling thought

Moreover, it is a reassuring thought for those who buy a new Fairphone 3, for example, that they can expect updates for years to come. The release of the beta does not mean that the update will be available to everyone. It will follow at a later date. The latest Android update for the Fairphone 2 dates from 2018 when it surprised friend and foe with an update to Android 7.1 Nougat. A transparent back cover was also presented at the time.
