Save your eyes and your battery on dark mode on your OnePlus phone

If you’ve got a modern(ish) Android phone with an OLED screen, you may be aware that dark mode is a thing that not only looks cool but can also save you some battery life. You see, OLED panels don’t activate any pixels when representing “black” — instead, black represents what it really is, the absence of light. By not activating large swaths of pixels, you inevitably save battery life. While it’s not as simple as a quick settings shortcut like on Samsung Galaxy phones, enabling dark mode on a OnePlus phone is still darn simple.

How to enable dark mode on your OnePlus phone

Open the Settings app.
Tap on Customization.

Tap on Preset Theme.

Tap on Nuanced dark.

Tap Apply when you see a pop-up asking you to confirm your choice.

Make any additional adjustments in the options below.

Just note that once you change the theme, any customizations you made previously with regards to accent colors, icon packs, etc. will have to be reconfigured. But have no fear, that can all be done from within the same customizations page you are currently on! For OnePlus phones, you’ll definitely want to make sure the Tone is updated, but you might also want to play around with your accent colors (I’m partial to blues and greens). Some apps like Fitbit still stubbornly refuse to abide by system preferences, but there are ways you can force dark mode on them as well.

Top-tier killer

This is a proper flagship phone for a bit less than the competition. It isn’t perfect (neither is its competition), but it’s a great phone and worth the extra money over the OnePlus 8 if you can afford it.

5G for the masses

The OnePlus 8 is a 7T with a few new specs, 5G, and a larger battery for a $100 price bump. Even at the higher price, it still represents incredible value thanks to all of the core tenets of OnePlus phones: good hardware, great software, excellent specs and strong battery life.
