“Google Pixel 5 doesn’t get Motion Sense”

Share

It was presented in a big way during the Pixel 4 announcement; Motion Sense. It should revolutionize the way we recognize hand movements thanks to radar. It turned out to be just a gimmick and an energy guzzler. That combined with the disappointing success of the Pixel 4 results in not returning to the Pixel 5.

After a flying start, the success of Google’s Pixel phone series is disappointing. Yes the cameras are above average but the huge lead Google had is gone. Moreover, new models are plagued by numerous teething problems. Defective microphones, reboot loops and blue screen tones. Not to mention conscious choices such as too little battery capacity.

The disappointing Pixel success has already led to consequences on the shop floor. A few high-ranking employes have left in the meantime. Now it turns out that Motion Sense is not the success formula that was hoped for, it turns out to be a one-off adventure. The upcoming Pixel 5 will not get it, according to the rumor today. Instead, Google is likely to reconnect with the more contemporary smartphone design with thin screen edges.

End exercise for Project Soli?

The choice will be an internal setback for Google. It worked for years on perfecting and reducing ‘Project Soli’ to fit into a phone. Motion Sense could be used to mute your alarm clock and scroll through your music. Already in many reviews it turned out to be too unreliable and it turned out to be more of a gimmick. Google also struggled to get the radar technology approved for every country where it sold its phones. It remains to be seen whether Project Soli will go quietly to its death with this. Google has plenty of other products in its range where it could be applied.
