LifeAfter is a dense survival game that lets you create and keep your own dog sidekick. Need I say more? Okay, fine.

Developed by NetEase Games, LifeAfter looks and plays like a big budget title that combines third-person combat and mutant zombies with the building and supply crafting elements. The survival RPG eases you into the gameplay mechanics via a guided narrative-led tutorial.

Once you progress through the tutorial, the game settles into the core gameplay which involves exploring and capturing new territory and building homes and fortresses to defend against the infected hordes. Storylines in mobile games are pretty notorious for being shallow and mostly useless, but LifeAfter does a better-than-average job developing characters and scenarios that draw you into the world.

The touchscreen controls are a mish-mash between PUBG and Fortnite — the combat controls are laid out almost identical to PUBG, while the build layout mimics Fortnite. Whereas Fortnite’s touchscreen controls really detracted when building in frantic moments of action, the implementation here is quite nice, as you aren’t usually under pressure when you’re building in LifeAfter.

LifeAfter is free to download install, which means there are in-app purchases, but in this case they are used to avoid grinding and waiting. There’s no doubt that this game will find an audience with fans of zombie survival games.

PUBG Mobile has proven that smartphone games don’t have to sacrifice graphics for better gameplay, or forgo engaging gameplay for better graphics. With LifeAfter, you get a that looks just as good as PUBG Mobile but with a fleshed-out story mode and more varied gameplay.
