Samsung is also building its own 5G modem for international variants.
Back in August, Motorola announced the Moto Z3, along with a 5G Moto Mod slated to come out in early 2019 that will work exclusively on Verizon’s 5G network. This will make the Z3 the first 5G phone in America, and while we’re still very much looking forward to that, it won’t be the only phone with 5G for long; thanks to a recent report, we can expect to see support for Verizon’s 5G network on a much more high-profile device, the highly rumored Galaxy S10.
According to a report from The Verge, Samsung and Verizon will be at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Technology Summit later this week to demonstrate its 5G proof-of-concept device, which features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 5G modem — the same one found in the 5G Moto Mod.
Of course, Samsung’s international variants don’t use Qualcomm components, so the company is also working on the Exynos 5100 to serve as its own first 5G modem.
Though we have no official projected date, Verizon and Samsung plan to release their first 5G device in the first half of 2019 — in other words, by the end of June.
