In a press release published on September 12, it was announced that RCS features will continue to work like normal even if two people are communicating between Android Messages and Samsung Messages. Such features include typing indicators, better group chat support, texting over Wi-Fi/data, high-res images, and read receipts.

Commenting on this news, Samsung’s EVP and Head of Product & Service Innovation Team, Patrick Chomet, said:

At Samsung, we adhere to a model of open collaboration to bring premium experiences to our customers across products. By furthering our robust partnership with Google, we will bring a richer messaging experience to our customers, letting them seamlessly chat with their friends and family across messaging platforms. This collaboration will help further the industry’s momentum toward advanced messaging and global RCS coverage.

Furthermore, Samsung says it’s also using this partnership to bring RCS support to a number of its exisitng phones as part of the Android 9 Pie update. These devices include the Galaxy S8/S8+, S8 Active, S9/S9+, Note 8, Note 9, and “select A and J series” phones.
