Microsoft has revealed that it will join forces with Samsung to develop smart home “internet of things” (IoT) devices that work on Windows 10. The idea is to let people monitor and control washing machines, refrigerators and other appliances using apps on Microsoft’s OS. To demonstrate the idea (below), Microsoft used Cortana to query whether a Samsung washing machine was in use and then brought up a chart showing when and how different family members used it.
Samsung strengthened its push into home automation and IoT at CES 2016 with its latest SUHD TVs, which act as hubs to control appliances and SmartThings devices like cameras, door sensors and alarms. The company now wants to branch out into other platforms with its devices and already has a close bond with Microsoft in PCs and tablets. And while the companies had been scrapping over Android patent royalties, they managed to settle amicably earlier this year. With the IoT relationship just getting started, there’s no word on whether Samsung will release certified connected devices for Windows 10 or to what extent the relationship will go. For that, we’ll likely have to wait until later this year.
