Nokē Bluetooth Padlock review

Over the past week, I was able to spend a chunk of time testing out the Nokē Bluetooth Padlock. The Nokē Padlock isn’t just any standard Padlock, and here’s why.

Overview

The Nokē Padlock is the perfect example of how technology can be put into such small objects and create something not just cool, but actually useful. One of the first things I noticed when opening the Nokē Padlock was its durable build, which felt just like any standard Padlock. It has a weight to it and is made of solid steel thus providing the protection we need while preventing possible damage from harsh weather. Opening the packaging gave me the feeling that something premium was inside and instructions were presented in a clear and concise way. Included in the box you’ll find an instructions card that guides you through the setup process and gives you tips on how to use the Nokē Padlock to its full potential.

Setup

Before heading into the setup process, it’s important to know that the purpose of the Nokē Padlock is to eliminate the use of keys or a PIN and use your smartphone or tablet to access whatever it is you have locked up. Setting up the Nokē Padlock was as easy as it gets. First off, users must download the Nokē app, which is available free of charge on all three major mobile platforms, Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

The Nokē Padlock uses Bluetooth to connect to your device and grant access to your lock. When you open up the Nokē app for the first time, you’ll be prompted to login or make a new account. Users need to provide their name, a password and an email address for confirmation. Once all confirmed and logged in, the next step is to pair your Nokē Padlock to your connected device.

The Nokē app will automatically begin searching for nearby Nokē devices once logged in. All you have to do is enable searching mode on your Padlock, which can be done by holding down the shackle. A color-changing LED will give you confirmation once connected.

Once recognized by your device, users are once again prompted with a notice, this one asking for a backup pattern, which can be constructed using series of long and short presses on the shackle. This is just in case the Padlock or connected device runs short of battery and/or fails to operate. During my testing, I experienced no connection issues or drainages. After setting the backup pattern, users will have the option to set a name for their Padlock and add a picture of their choice to represent the lock.

Nokē app & Functionality

Noke_review_screenshot_TA_9Once the setup process is complete, you’re all ready to use your Nokē Padlock. From now on, your connected device will act as the key to your Padlock. When the Nokē Padlock notices that your connected device is inside Bluetooth range, and you press down on the shackle, the lock will do its job. This can be set to open up automatically or require a login to your Nokē account prior to unlocking. In order to tell the lock to open, simply push down on the shackle until the LED lights up. And if you happen to forget your phone, you can always use the backup pattern that you set up during the installation.

Perhaps the best feature of the Nokē Padlock is the ability to send a remote key to friends and family. This can be done entirely through the app which then sends an email address to grant someone else access. Best of all, the owner of the lock will be notified whenever someone unlocks or messes with your Nokē Padlock. If it’s someone you know, it’ll specify his/her name, and if Nokē thinks it’s an attempted robbery, it’ll notify you when the incident takes place. You’ll also get a message when the Nokē is locked again as well as a full map containing the exact location of the lock just in case someone tries to steal it. All the information such as who, when and where is stored on the history page inside the Nokē app, which is only viewable by the lock’s owner. It should also be noted that multiple locks can be added to the same app.

Just in case you’re having a problem, Nokē provides a full-fledged support center within the app for commonly asked questions and numbers in which you can contact if there’s a problem.

Closing & Impressions

The Nokē Padlock is easy to use and very secure. No key or combination is required thus making it the ultimate lock for someone who doesn’t feel like memorizing another passcode. Just simply push, login and done. And just in case of an emergency, you can always plug-in a cable for a jump-start or enter the backup pattern. It takes just a few taps to share with your friends and family, and can be revoked at any point in time. The body is as tough as they get and the added water-resistance makes it prone to whatever weather comes its way. Additionally, the steel metal body is just like a standard Padlock so it can’t be easily broken.

With the Nokē Bluetooth Padlock I have faith that my belongings are safe. I don’t have to worry about people breaking in and it’s no longer a concern if I forget my passcode. I believe that the Nokē Padlock could find a place for just about every smartphone user so long as he/she can get over the rather high price tag of $69.
