The Cortana personal assistant from Microsoft is making its way to Cyanogen OS as expected. A user on the OnePlus forums noted that an update was rolling out to Cyanogen OS. The update’s changelog notes the improvements include integration of Cortana into the operating system.

As we noted in our review of Cortana on Android, one of the limitations Microsoft faces is not being able to integrate at a deep level with the operating system to the extent that Google, with Google Now, is able to achieve. This takes the edge off what appears to be a strong contender for a digital assistant for smartphone users.

Even at the higher levels, to be effective users need to commit to the Microsoft ecosystem or the Google ecosystem to get the greatest benefit out of the respective digital assistants. For Android powered devices, getting the most out of Cortana will be difficult. However, users running Cyanogen OS will be able to get much more benefit than users of the standalone app.

Thus far the update that includes Cortana and its operating system integration is only hitting OnePlus One handsets. However, other OnePlus devices should eventually receive the update as well.
