The Turing Phone’s ship date and its Dark Wyvern edition are announced

Share

Late this past week, Turing Robotic Industries (TRI) stated December 18, 2015 as the ship date for its Turing Phone, a cipher phone made of material stronger than steel. The company also announced Foxconn Group as its manufacturing partner.

Here are some dates to keep in mind for those interested in the phone:

  • September 21st, 2015: “Circle of Friends” invites become ready for those who reserved the phone during the initial reservation period
  • September 24th, 2015: the special edition Dark Wyvern becomes available (full payment required); people who reserved the phone will be notified to pay in full with an optional upgrade to the Dark Wyvern edition available
  • December 18th, 2015: The Turing Phone ships

The Dark Wyvern edition, named after the Wyvern, a flying, mythical creature associated with stealth, has two options. First, there is the standard Dark Wyvern for $999. Lastly, the Dark Wyvern Glaedr will be available for $1,299. Only 3,000 units of the Glaedr will be produced, with more information about the variant to be announced on September 9th, 2015. Both will have 128GB of internal storage.

The site for the Turing Phone has Android 5.1 Lollipop as the OS. Android, of course, is the most targeted mobile platform for malware, at about 5,000 new strains per day.

With this in mind, I have to wonder if TRI will consider integrating an antimalware solution into its Turing Phones in the future. “Ultra-secure” appears to apply just to encrypted communication, at least for now. Although, you could argue that users who’d buy such a device are quite tech-savvy and already have their antimalware app of choice.

But what are your thoughts about the Turing Phone? Would you be interested in buying a cipher phone?
