Yahoo that once dominated the instant messaging world has launched its unique video/text messaging app, Livetext. The app targets to bring text messaging closer to real-life conversations by combining silent video clips with text messages.

“While texting is quick and easy, you often miss the meaning of a message, have to explain your reaction, or wait hours before getting a response. And to actually talk on the phone, you not only have to be available, but you also have to be in a place where you can chat,” said Arjun Sethi, Product Manager, Yahoo.

The app also happens to be ephemeral, which means the conversations get deleted as soon as you leave them. In short, if Snapchat was about GIFs instead of pictures, it would look like Yahoo’s Livetext.

The app is currently being tested in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ireland, it will be released the U.S., the UK, Canada, Germany and France tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see how Yahoo’s Livetext fares against the likes of WhatsApp, Line, Snapchat and WeChat in terms of popularity as Yahoo must be looking to create a solid user base before it plans to monetize the app.
