Ting, the MVNO operating off the backs of Sprint’s network, is about get much more interesting in the coming year. The carrier today confirmed the upcoming support for unlocked GSM handsets. Set to take effect in February, Ting’s not yet ready to announce its partner. Not to worry, though, a quick peek at the source code of the site names T-Mobile.

Once enabled, Ting will allow for customers to put both GSM and CDMA smartphones on the same account, even though they were initially designed for competing carriers. A first in the industry, it’s definitely intriguing stuff. And, instead of supporting roughly 10 percent of the handsets on the market, Ting will be able to work with roughly 80 percent of the phones released in the last few years.
