Just like T-Mobile’s and Sprint’s support pages indicated, Google has finally kicked off the rollout of Android 5.0.1 for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6.

Users of Google’s two pure Android smartphones should receive system update notifications over the following days and hours. As its numbering suggests, Android 5.0.1 is a minor update that brings bug fixes and stability improvements, so unless your device suffers from egregious bugs, you’re not missing much by waiting out this update. If, however, you need – or simply want – the latest firmware now, you can easily update your device manually, by way of factory images or OTA files.

Nexus 5

  • Download the Android Lollipop 5.0.1 (LRX22C) factory image for Nexus 5
  • Download the OTA file from Android 5.0 (LRX21O) to Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C) for Nexus 5

Nexus 6

  • Download the Android Lollipop 5.0.1 (LRX22C) factory image for Nexus 6
  • Download the OTA file from Android 5.0 (LRX21O) to Android 5.0.1 (LRX22C) for Nexus 6

Flashing the OTA file allows you to keep your data, but you must be on the specified version for the update to work. Flashing a factory image replaces the entire firmware, so you will lose all data and modifications.
