Amazon announces Prime Now, a 1 hour delivery service on your purchases

Amazon is looking to really push its delivery services and abilities with the announcement of Amazon Prime Now. The service, which also has its own dedicated Prime Now App, gives you access to an increasing number of items that can be ordered and delivered to your doorstep, or office, in just 1 hour.

Like any service, there is a catch. As you probably saw in the video, 1-hour delivery is an additional $7.99. However, you do get free two-hour shipping if you have an Amazon Prime membership and there is a 30 day free trial available as always.

You won’t be going through your traditional Amazon app or online though. There is a dedicated Prime Now app that will give you quick access to the tens of thousands of items that are eligible to be shipped out in the 1 or 2 hours window between 6am and Midnight 7 days a week. That means no 3 a.m. after the club shopping for you. Most of your normal consumer goods can be found, like laundry soap, paper towels, and toilet paper. You will also find cables, chargers, SD cards, tablets, headphones and other similar items that are generally small. Don’t expect to find a 65-inch TV available for 1 hour deliver, but you can certainly grab yourself a Fire TV and have it delivered in time for Pizza.

“There are times when you can’t make it to the store and other times when you simply don’t want to go. There are so many reasons to skip the trip and now Prime members in Manhattan can get the items they need delivered in an hour or less,” said Dave Clark, Amazon‘s senior vice president of worldwide operations. “We’ve long felt that Amazon Prime is the best deal in the history of shopping and now it has gotten even better. Prime members in Manhattan are going to love this service and we cannot wait to roll out Prime Now to additional cities in 2015.”

The launch of Prime Now is only available in parts Manhattan with zip codes of 10001, 10010, 10016, 10017, 10018, 10019, 10020, 10022 and 10036, but will expand to other cities and zip codes in 2015. I imagine the locations that already have Amazon shipping facilities will be the first to get added.  I am sure there will be a lot of Amazon shoppers that will be happy to have things delivered to their door much quicker, especially those items that they need right now, but don’t have the time or means to make a trip to a brick and mortar store.

Grab the app and take a poke about. If you live in Manhattan, or work there, you should definitely pickup the app and see what it has to offer.
