Samsung mulling over management changes at the top

Samsung Electronics is considering a major change with upper management according to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.    According to the article, Samsung would move out the current CEO of the mobile division(Samsung currently has 3 co-CEO’s), J.K. Shin, while moving in the current co CEO of the home-appliance and TV division, B.K. Yoon.  The possible change is a response to a subpar year for Samsung with increasing competition to its mobile division from a slew of Chinese manufacturers as well as Apple.

Samsung does not release sales numbers of their devices, but they did report a 74% decrease in year-over-year profits.  Part of that large decrease is due in large part to the S5 not reaching sales expectations, reported by the Wall Street Journal. According to the article, in the first three months since the release of the S5 in April, Samsung sold 40% fewer Galaxy S5’s than they sold with the Galaxy S4 a year earlier.  In those three months, 12 million S5’s were sold compared to 16 million S4’s in 2013.

Device manufacturers HTC, LG and Sony all released their flagship smartphones roughly around the same period to much fanfare.  The new One M8, G3, and Z3 all made marked improvements on already excellent phones from 2013.  It’s clear that the competition has heated up dramatically since 2012 when some of these flagships did not exist.  Back then the S3 had far less competition leading many customers to buy from Samsung.  On top of the major players releasing great devices we also had companies like Oneplus make their debut with a powerhouse device at the price of a midrange Android phone.  So the S5’s sales numbers don’t necessarily reflect a poor device, but the numbers reflect stiffer competition.

Wether or not Samsung decides to make changes at the top, they still continue to make fabulous devices like the Note 4 which many expert reviewers consider to be the best Android phone of 2014.  Even Apple fans of the iPhone 6+ should thank J.K. Shin for bringing us the first Note which lead to the rise of the “phablets.”

If Yoon does become the mobile divisions CEO, he would retain his current responsibilities in addition to his new ones while hopefully giving us a better integrated experience with our home appliances and mobile devices.
