How to root the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 Bootloader

For those of you who have received your Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices and are anxious to begin tinkering with them then you’ll need to unlock the Bootloader.

Whilst unlocking the Bootloader does void your warranty, it does allow you to do cool things like root, flash ROMS, and put on custom recovery software. So if you’re still interested, then follow along with the below instructions:

– As a prerequisitie, you’ll need to have the Android SDK that will provide you with the adb and fastboot commands. You can download the SDK from here and you’ll find the adb and fastboot files in the ‘Platform-tools’ folder.

Ready?

Enable “Developer options” by tapping 5 or 6 times on the Build number in Settings>About phone.

Go back to settings and choose Developer options; check the box for USB debugging.While in there, also check the box for “Enable OEM unlock.”

Plug your phone into your computer. You’ll need to give it USB debugging access through a pop-up.

Open a command prompt from within the ‘Platform-tools’ SDK folder and type:

adb reboot bootloader

When you see the boot screen on your device, type:

fastboot oem unlock

A bootloader unlocker confirmation page will appear asking you to confirm the changes, tap volume up to select yes and power button to confirm.

Your phone will reboot and during so will perform a factory reset. Once it boots back up you are done and you should see an unlock icon during boot.

That’s all there is to it – now your new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are able to have custom ROMS, root, and a custom recovery installed, if you want to that is.
