As of version 2.27 of Chainfire’s SuperSU, you no longer need a modified kernel to gain root on Lollipop devices. It is in Beta, and Chainfire does warn that you could break something and get into a bootloop, but it is an incredible feat to get such a feature even possible.

If you want to take advantage of the new Beta SuperSU then Chainfire recommends that you should flash back to stock and then re-root using the new Beta.

If all goes well, and Chainfire gets the feedback he needs to make the release as stable as possible, then you’ll see SuperSU updated in the Google Play Store.

If you’re interested in checking out the Beta of SuperSU, then head on over to the XDA thread for more information.
