Avia Media Player from the State College, PA-based Videon Central was one of the first media streaming apps available with Chromecast support after Google released the SDK just one year ago. The company just released a massive update to version 7.2 that updates the design that was slightly lacking and outdated, plus integrates LG’s Connect SDK to enable Apple TV, Roku, and Smart TVs with WebOS while continuing to support the Chromecast and DLNA enabled devices.

According to Videon, using the Connect SDK to jumpstart their efforts, it adds over 30 million potential new devices to which users can share photos, video and music using Avia.

In addition to the expanded footprint, the new version of Avia includes an updated user interface, icons and themes. The design now stays true to Google’s Material Design guidelines.

I got to test a beta version of the app as well as the Light and Dark themes. The themes, white for Light and black for Dark, are both beautiful. The theme can be changed by easily going into the settings and clicking on “Themes.” It seems that Videon has realized how important the design of an application is to its users as well as the ability to customize it since one size doesn’t always fit all. At the time of writing this, the Dark is available in the official app and the Light will be coming in the next day.

Themes will be available with the $4.99 inapp purchase that enables casting. If you aren’t familiar with the Avia app, it’s available for free for your Android device on Google Play and Amazon, but to enable casting functionality, you need to do the IAP. Avia for Roku is available on the Roku Channel Store.

The one thing that really impressed me with the updated Avia app is how far it has come as far as streaming your content. I remember in the past having some trouble with it streaming movies smoothly and according to the product manager for Avia, there’s a lot of new stuff going on under-the-hood. I tried streaming a couple movies such as Maleficent and some home movies shot with my OnePlus One and all streamed flawlessly to the Chromecast connected to my living room TV.

One last thing I need to mention is that with the release of this updated app, Videon is holding a little contest and will be giving away a Google Play gift card, Chromecast, Roku 3 and Apple TV. All you need to do is spread the word on Twitter, Google+ and/or Facebook using the hashtag of the device you want to win, either #appletv, #chromecast, #roku or #googleplay, include @aviamediaplayer, and provide a link to contest page, then you’re entered the win. Visit the contest page, www.aviatheapp.com/win, for more info.

With this update, Videon is really going after bringing more users in and it’s an app that should now compete directly with Koush’s AllCast. Now you have another choice when it comes to casting all the things!
