As phone screens get bigger and bigger every little millimeter counts. Reducing the size of the phone as a whole while increasing screen space is the goal for most companies. Bigger screens allow for more productivity and immerse media content. The only drawback of larger screens is the increase in the final size of the phone. Larger phones become difficult to handle. LG has announced today it has made a 5.3 full HD LCD panel with the smallest bezel at 0.7mm. To put this in prospective the displays bezel is thinner than the width of a credit card.

LG has achieved this by using what they call “Neo Edge” technology. Neo Edge uses an adhesive to attach and seal the total area and edges of the panel’s circuit board and back-light unit. This thin bezel allows the user to enjoy a large screen without loss of grip or functionality of the device. Another added advantage is that it reduces the possibility of corrosion along the edge, makes it waterproof, and dust proof. The last feature mentioned by LG is “AIT” that reduces size and cost by embedding the touch sensor in the LCD.

LG will start mass production in November and the first customers to receive the new screens will be in China followed by a global promotion. There is no word on what devices consumers will see this new screen in or if there is plans for different sizes. The news today places hope that newer devices will become thinner, lighter, cheaper, and more durable without loss of functionality or screen resolution.
