How to bring back the ‘steps today’ card on your Android Wear smartwatch after installing Google Fit

Google released the Fit app a few days ago, which keeps track of all our fitness activities. If you own an Android Wear smartwatch and installed the Fit app, you might have noticed that you’re no longer getting a “XXXX steps today” card. Instead, you might be seeing a card for a “X min today” as in how many minutes you were active. It’s pretty easy to get your “Steps” card back. Hit the break to get started.

When you first opened the Google Fit app on the phone, you were asked a series of question like your weight, age, etc. One of the questions dealt with setting a goal for active time. If you tapped on “confirm” for the suggested amount (most likely 1 hour), it simply made this the default card to appear on your watch.

The good news is that your steps are still being calculated. You can always say, “OK Google, show me my steps,” but in less than a minute, you can get your watch to show the “Steps” card all the time like it did before.

Just open the Google Fit app on your phone. You will notice that at the bottom of the main screen, it will show either the amount of time walking or how many steps you have taken. Whatever is shown is the default that will show on your watch. Since you are reading this guide, you’re probably seeing the amount of time you have walked. Now you can still see your steps by swiping right or left at the middle circle, but what you really want to do is get your watch to show you your total steps instead of the your activity time.

1) Tap onto the three dot icon at the top right and choose Settings.

2) You will see a Daily goal at the bottom which should show the Active time with a certain amount of hours. 1 hour was the default setting when you first opened Google Fit. Just tap on the number to the left of “h.”

3) Now choose “Active time” and change it to “Steps.” You can also enter a different daily goal if you wish.

4) Tap on Save at the top right, and now the bottom of the main screen will show your total steps as your default.

This means your watch will now show the “XXXX steps today” card instead of the “X min today” card. The Fit app will still track your active time. To see it, just swipe right or left on the circle of the main screen of the app to toggle between showing you your total steps or how long you have been active.

I hope this guide helped you. If I missed something, please let me know in the comments.
