Square Enix to release Final Fantasy VI on iOS this winter

The Final Fantasy series is beloved by gamers around the globe, so the announcement of a release of Final Fantasy VI this winter for iOS and Android is sure to be met with delight. Takashi Tokita of Square Enix broke the news in a recent interview with Kotaku:

“It is basically like a remake of the original VI,” Tokita said as he proudly revealed his surprise at the end of a presentation about the recent smartphone release of FFV and the upcoming mobile release of FFIV: The After Years. “But there have been some enhancements.”

Instead of being a mere straight port, the game control system will be customized for the touchscreen environment. Battle systems will be altered, and the graphics will be refined for the smartphone screen.

Better yet, Tokita didn’t completely rule out the possibility of a mobile version of Final Fantasy VII sometime in the future.

“We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII.”

For now, we’re more than happy with Final Fantasy VI, and we, like many others, will be waiting excitedly for its arrival. How does this grab you, Final Fantasy fans?
