Aussies and Kiwis will get to play Plants vs Zombies 2 first

Popcap Games is working on one of the most hotly-anticipated mobile games ever – Plants vs. Zombies 2. On Tuesday senior producer Allen Murray announced plans for a “soft launch” that will enable players in Australia and New Zealand to get first crack, according to Murray’s blog post.

Murray writes:

The goals of this focused launch are twofold: First, it’s to test our back-end server capacity to make sure we are ready and capable of handling the traffic of our players worldwide. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to be connected to play, we just want to make sure everyone can get the game.) Second, it’s an opportunity for us to test at scale how our players play the game as well as how they interact with our store.

Murray cautions prospective testers that Popcap will likely implement “lots of changes” during the testing phase, including testing aspects of the game’s functionality, pricing and stability. So this play-testing isn’t for the faint-hearted.

Still, if you’re an Aussie or a Kiwi, many of us are seething with jealously that you’ll be able to get your hands on this game before the rest of us.

  • Plants vs. Zombies 2 delayed, now arriving sometime ‘later in the summer’
  • Gameplay video of Plants vs. Zombies 2
  • Plants vs. Zombies 2 launches July 18, will be available for free
