Super Monkey Ball 2

Sega’s Super Monkey Ball, originally developed for the Nintendo GameCube back in the early noughties, was one of the first games available at the launch of the Apple iPhone 3G back in the summer of 2008. It very quickly became far and away one of our favourite and most-played handheld games of that year.

Trixel

Adept Games’ Trixel is one of the most addictive puzzle games we have played in years. It is also a great example how Apple’s App Store has shaken up the game development scene – opening up opportunities for small and independent developers to take their games to a mass audience like never before.

Street Fighter IV

Street Fighter fans are a hard lot to please, but Capcom’s new version of Street Fighter IV for iPhone seems to have done the trick. While the game is nothing to write home about in terms of graphics or features, the basic gameplay has been ported faithfully, which is really all the fans care about.

StarCannon

One problem with iPhone gaming is the fact that many of the games on the platform have not been designed specifically to make use of the device’s smaller screen and touchscreen control. There are too many well-known console titles ported to iPhone that simply do not work and only serve to disappoint gamers. Thankfully, Jagex’s awesome new shmup StarCannon is not one of them.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

It would be easy to accuse Sega of trying to cash-in with this latest re-release of its classic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for iPhone. But the developers have clearly worked incredibly hard to lovingly re-create the original console experience on Apple’s device.

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars

Chinatown Wars gives Super Monkey Ball 2 a close run for its money for our coveted ‘best game on iPhone’ title, but one thing is for certain – gamers began to take note once they realised that these and numerous other quality titles were appearing on Apple’s smartphone.

Flight Control

Developer FireMint’s Flight Control is an almost perfect iPhone game. It is very simple. Very easy to learn. And very, very addictive. All you have to do it to try to land airplanes by dragging your finger across the screen and ensuring they have the right landing path and don’t crash.

Fishing Kings

It was the mighty Sega that originally convinced us that the idea of a videogame based on sea-fishing could actually be rather a lot of fun, and while traditional ‘real-world’ anglers may scoff, ‘Fishing Kings’ is certainly one of the better games to be released on the iPhone in the last year or so.

Beneath a Steel Sky: Remastered

The iPhone already has its share of re-worked classics such as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy games and Capcom’s Street Fighter series, but it is the forgotten classics of yesteryear such as Revolution Software’s incredible Beneath a Steel Sky that are finding a whole new audience thanks to Apple’s smartphone.

The Muppets: Animal Drummer

he Muppets: Animal Drummer is an unashamedly fun rhythm-action game based around the certifiably insane Animal, one of our all-time favourite characters from the show. Animal is drummer for Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem and the game is built around watching the red maniac bash away at his kit and then trying to match his drum patterns.
