How to Load Music on the iPod or iPhone Manually

Share

iPhone-5-hands-on-slashgear-065-580x4931If you decided against automatic updating of either your entire library or iTunes’ automatic selection from it, you need to load the iPod or iPhone manually. You can perform either of the following actions:

• Connect the device to your computer, wait until its entry appears in the Source list, and then drag songs, artists, albums, or playlists to its entry. When you drop the items, iTunes
copies the songs to the device, which takes a few seconds.

Enjoy Audio with an iPod or iPhone and iTunes

• Create a playlist for the iPod or iPhone by choosing File | New Playlist, typing the name in the text box, and then pressing ENTERS (Windows) or RETURN (Mac). Drag songs, albums, or artists to the playlist to add them. When you’re ready to load the playlist, connect the iPod or iPhone to your computer, wait until its entry appears in the Source list, and then drag the playlist to the entry. ITunes then copies the songs to the device all at once.

To force iTunes to copy to an iPod or iPhone any song files that lack the tag information the device normally requires, add the songs to a playlist. Doing so can save you time over retagging many files manually and can be useful in a pinch. (In the long term, you’ll probably want to make sure all your song files are tagged properly.)

Choose Custom Synchronization Settings

Setting up synchronization of songs, videos, and maybe photos with the iPod or iPhone is a good start, but you’ll probably want to choose custom synchronization settings so that you can get exactly the files and data you want on the iPod or iPhone. To choose custom settings, connect the iPod or iPhone, click the iPod or iPhone’s entry in the Devices category in the Source list, and then set options on the devices settings tabs (discussed next). Click the Apply button in the lower-right corner of the window to apply your changes

Choose Info or Contacts Synchronization Settings

On the Info tab (for the iPhone or iPod touch; see Figure 2-11) or the Contacts tab (for the iPod classic and iPod nano), choose which information you want to synchronize with the iPod or iPhone:

• Mobile Me (iPhone only) Click the Learn More button to learn about how you can use Apple’s Mobile Me online service to push data to an iPhone.

• Contacts On Windows; select the Sync Contacts With check box and choose the source in the drop-down list: Yahoo! Address Book, Windows Address Book or Windows Contacts, Google Contacts, or Outlook. On Mac OS X, select the Sync Address Book Contacts check box. On either OS, either select the All Contacts option button, or select the Selected Groups option button and select the check box for each group of contacts you want. For the iPod classic and iPod nano, select the Include Contacts’ Photos check box if you want to include photos. For the iPhone, select the Put New Contacts Created On This iPhone Into The Group check box and choose the group in the drop-down list.

• Calendars On Windows; select the Sync Calendars With check box and choose the source in the drop-down list—for example, Outlook. On the Mac, select the Sync iCal Calendars check box. On either OS, either select the All Calendars option button, or select the Selected Calendars option button and select the check box for each calendar you want.

• Mail Accounts (iPhone and iPod touch only) On Windows, select the Sync Selected Mail Accounts From check box, and then choose the mail program in the  drop-down list: Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail. On the Mac, select the Sync Selected Mail Accounts check box. On either OS, select the check box for each account you want to synchronize.

• Web Browser (iPhone and iPod touch only) On Windows, select the Sync Bookmarks With check box, and then choose the browser (Internet Explorer or Safari) in the drop-down list. On the Mac, select the Sync Safari Bookmarks check box.
